Profit is selling price minus cost. Margin percent is profit ÷ selling price × 100 — the share of the sale you keep. A negative result means the item sold at a loss.
Margin is measured against the selling price; markup is measured against cost, so the two percentages differ for the same deal. This tool reports margin, which is the figure most retail and P&L reporting uses.
