For ax² + bx + c = 0, the tool uses the quadratic formula and reports the discriminant b² − 4ac, which decides the nature of the roots: positive gives two real roots, zero gives one repeated root, negative gives a complex pair.
The leading coefficient a must be non-zero; with a = 0 the equation is linear, not quadratic. Complex roots are reported where the discriminant is negative.
